The Best Of A Lifetime Of Stories From A Short Story Writer Of Rare Distinction. Ruskin Bond's stories Are Predominantly Set In The Beautiful Hill Country Of Garhwal Where He Has Made His Home For The Last Twenty-Five Years. Some Of These Stories Present People Who, Consciously Or Otherwise, Need Each Other: People In Love Or In Need Of Love, The Awkward Adolescent And The Timid Lover. Some Are Gently Satirical Studies About Village And Small-Town Braggarts And Petty Officials. Several Others Mourn The Gradual Erosion Of The Beauty Of The Hills (And The Gentle People Who Live In Them) With The Coming Of The Steel And Dust And Worries Of Modern Civilization. All The Stories Are Rewarding For Their Compassionate Portrayal Of Love, Loss, Accomplishment, Pain And Struggle.

Introduction:

Being a Ruskin Bond fan I always look forward to reading his books. This book was on my wishlist for a long time and finally bought it on my recent book haul to Flora Fountain, Mumbai. I decided to read this book on his birthday. So let’s check out more about this book.

Summary:

This book includes 30 short stories; each story is beautiful in its own way.

‘The woman on platform 8’ is an amazing story where a school child met an unknown woman on platform no 8 but the way she took care of him is really heart touching. ‘The coral tree’ is a story about a man who is permanently moving from his place but at the last moment, he meets a girl. ‘The photograph’ is a story where grandson finds the photograph of his grandmother’s childhood and with this, the old memories comes back in her mind.

‘The window’ is a beautiful story where a man sees the beauty of the world through his window. ‘Chachi’s funeral’ is an amusing and humorous story where a child does last rites of his Chachi in a unique way. ‘The man who was Kipling’ is a story where strangely a man meets to Kipling. ‘The eyes have it’ is an interesting story where a blind man tries to converse the fellow lady commuter, I have never read any story like this.

‘The thief’ story talks about a small thief boy who thefts in his wellwisher’s house but what happen next is something must read. ‘The boy who broke the bank’ is a humorous story where a bank broke but the reason will surely make you laugh. A ‘The neighbor’s wife’ talk about a man who is influenced by his neighbor’s wife what happens next is quite amusing to read.

‘The night train at Deoli’ is a superbly beautiful story where a boy sees a girl on the Deoli platform; get an urge to meet her but will he ever find her again? ‘Bus stop, Pipalnagar’ talks the story of a small town struggling writer and an orphan boy. ‘The garlands on his brow’ talks about the old days of Hassan, when he was strong and how he come to down still.

‘A Guardian Angel’ is a beautiful story where a boy is raised by a sex worker and unlike others why he considers her a guardian angel. ‘Death of a Familiar’ is a story of Sunil who is badass and how he ends up murdered. ‘The Kitemaker’ is a beautiful story where an old kite man reminisces his old days.

‘The Monkey’ is typical Ruskin Bond story with a mixture of horror and humor. ‘The prospect of flowers’ is indeed one of the best stories in this book, where an old lady meets a small boy who also loves the flower like her. The story ‘A case of Inspector Lal’ is already read by me in the book ‘A season of ghosts’.

‘A face in the night’ is a terrifying story. ‘A job well done’ is a little quirky story which astonished you as well as leaves a smile on face. ‘The story of Madhu’ is heart touching story of a little girl. ‘The cherry tree’ is a lovely story where a little boy plants cherry seed hoping to it become a tree one day. ‘My father’s trees in Dehra’ story will absolutely moisten your eyes and makes you visit your hometown.

‘Panther’s Moon’ is one of the big stories in this book. The story revolves around Panther attacks and life of villagers. ‘The Leopard’ story talks about how human are destroying the wildlife. ‘Sita and the river’ is a story of Sita and how her life changed due to flood. ‘Love is a sad song’ is a story where a 30-year-old man falls in love with a teenager girl.  ‘When you can’t climb trees anymore’ is for everyone who has now grown-up and really missed their old days. ‘A love of long ago’ is a small yet amazing story where blooming flower pots help to retain the freshness of love.

Writing style:

The language is pretty simple and the narration is flawless making you finish this book in just two days.

My perception:

This book is a bag of every emotion. Each story will connect to your heart. You can find humorous, quirky, heart touching, horror as well as mature stories in this book. I loved each and every story in this book. The way author opens up the story and then embark to elaborate it is really impressive.  I cannot select my favorite among these as each story has its own impact. And yes the way author write about the mountains is truly mesmerizing to read. Do not miss to read the foreword; he is the only writer whose foreword is as interesting as the stories.

If you have not read this book yet, then you are missing it you should definitely pick this up.

Until next time, Keep reading 🙂

First of all, I would like to thanks @writersmelon and @harpercollinsin for the copy. 😊The first thing which attracts me towards this book is the alluring book cover. The contrasting use of black and white colors with two human figures on the bicycle made me read this book.
I have never read any dystopian novel before thus the concept of this book was totally new to me. This book starts on a very interesting note which makes you flip the pages. .

You must have read various stories revolving around the Kashmir issue. This book also depicts the same essence but with a different twist. There is no doubt that leaving our home in few hours is the most painful experience in the world. This becomes more septic when one has to suffer without committing any mistake. The title of this book is catchy and gives a ray of hope. I would like to thank the #fingerprintpublishing for giving me a chance to read this beautiful book. 💜

Love is a feeling which cannot be expressed in the words. From many years, poets and writers are penning about this. Over the time, the definition of love changed. If we see the present situation then there are very few people who love each other unconditionally.  Living in the modern era when the other things take importance, do we have time to explore and understand love? The author of this book tried to give us some influential love sutra through the various stories. Thank you so much dear author for giving me a chance to read and review your debut work. 😊

First of all, I would like to thank the publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The first thing which attracts the readers is the enchanting book cover, adorned with magenta colour and the palm of Buddha. This book cover can attract even a non-reader. After reading the blurb and genre, I was quite skeptical about this book but to my surprise, it turned out to be one of best non-fiction books of this year. .
