It feels very bad to me when I see book bloggers living in stress and totally boycott to enjoy the reading. When I started this book blog 2 years back (on a free platform) I didn’t know a single thing about book blogging. One day I just thought to start a blog and started writing book reviews. At that time, I didn’t even know that you get free copies for review. So at first, it feels so good to get a free copy of a book in exchange for an honest book review but soon it becomes the tedious task and I totally forget to enjoy the book because of book review deadline.
And I am sure I am not alone, there are many book bloggers who are totally stressing out because of book review deadline. With two years of book blogging experiences, I have accumulated these tips which are really helpful for smooth and stress-free book blogging.
1. Accept your favorite genres:
This is the most important thing. You should accept the books which genres please you; otherwise, you end up leaving the book midway which is not good on the professional front. One should first read the book’s blurb and then ought to choose the book.
2. Choose your preferred format:
The format is another important aspect of book blogging. Sending a hardback or paperback costs more so there are some authors who choose to send you PDF instead. You all must be agree that PDF is the worst format as it stressed out eyes as well as you don’t find yourself engaged with the books. In starting, I used to happily accept PDF format but soon after it started affecting my eyes. Hence, I invested in Kindle and ask the author who can’t afford to send paperback to send the Kindle edition as a gift or send .mobi format. In short, you should clearly tell the authors/publishers about your preferred format.
3. Talk about the deadline beforehand:
Deadline is the most stressful part of book blogging as every author who provides you book expects to get the review super soon. But it can’t happen as we also have a different life other than reading. So what I do, I beforehand tell the authors that it will take so many days to read and review. And if due to some reason, you aren’t able to post the review in the given time period then it is your duty to inform the author. This prior conversation literally helps to avoid confusion and helps you to set a reading and reviewing goal.
4. Keep a book review journal:
I don’t generally use it but I have seen various readers and book reviewers use it. What they do is jot down the thoughts and points which they find interesting while reading. Honestly saying I can’t keep such a journal but I normally scribble points while reading the book. This little activity literally helps you to write an impressive book review as you do not miss a single point.
5. Write book review immediately:
This is a very effective tip and I always try to implement it. You should write book reviews as soon as you finish the book. Because at this time, everything is fresh in your mind and subconsciously you keep thinking about the book. This also helps to keep your blogging activity smooth as you don’t delay writing review and posting it.
6. Keep your review format simple:
I have seen many book bloggers who at starting point use complex and elaborative book review format but as soon as the review work increases it becomes very hard to follow those book review format. The result, you stressed out. What I suggest is to keep your book review format as simple as possible from the initial stage so that you don’t have to change your format in between.
7. Make a note of your TBR:
You should also make a list of the books in your TBR, ARC and review copies. This will help you to choose your next read as well as you will know which book should be review first.
8. Stop taking review copies:
If you are really stressed out and not enjoying reading and reviewing then you should definitely take a break from reviewing. In this time, read the books which you want to read since a long time and read it slowly. This little break will rejuvenate your reading and review activity.
9. Be polite:
Last and most precious tip, which I diligently adhere. Always be polite. Book reviewing is a work where you meet awesome authors, publishers, and book bloggers. It is the place where you learn many things apart from book blogging. However pissed off you are, you should always talk politely with the authors and publishers. One thing you must always remember, that writing a book is not an easy task and if you are criticizing anyone’s work then keep it as humble as possible. If you can then apart from a book review, you should definitely give more to the authors. This simple thing will help you to earn more respect.
These are not so professional or I can say full proven tips to stress-free book blogging, but these are the tips which work fine for me so I thought to share it with you all. I hope each one of you finds it helpful.
