About the Book: Maharani H.H. is the spoilt, selfish, beautiful widow of the Maharaja of Mastipur. She lives with her dogs and her caretaker, Hans, in an enormous old house in Mussoorie, taking lovers and discarding them, drinking too much, and fending off her reckless sons who are waiting hungrily for their inheritance. The seasons come and go, hotels burn down, cinemas shut shop, and people leave the hill station never to return. But H.H. remains constant and indomitable. Observing her antics, often with disapproval, is her old friend Ruskin, who can never quite cut himself off from her. Melancholic, wry and full of charm, Maharani is a delightful novella about love, death and friendship. About the Author: Ruskin Bond Ruskin Bond is the acclaimed author of over five hundred novellas, stories, essays and poems, all of which has established him as one of Indias most beloved writers. His most recent works are Secrets and Susannas Seven Husbands which was turned into the film Saat Khoon Maaf. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993 and the Padma Shri in 1999. Reviews Delightful- Hindustan Times Seldom is a fictional character so real as the "Maharani". Outrageous and eccentric, she just wont be restrained to the pages of this slim novel- India Today A charming . . . and amused look at a decadent queen- Tehelka

Introduction:

Ruskin Bond’s fan never misses a chance to read his books. πŸ˜€ I have heard about this book and really wanted to buy this book. The title and book cover is really eye-catching and it finally made me buy this book. So let’s check out more about this book.

Plot summary:

Narrated from the point of view of the writer, this book talks about Maharani of Mastipur, Β Neena also called as H.H. She is a flamboyant widow of Maharaja of Mastipur.

The Maharaja has its own story and the way his first wife and Maharaja dies is surprising to read.

She loves drinking and found solace in different kinds of alcohol. She is also infamous for using her lovers and discarding them. Her two sons are worthless and keep fights with her for money.

She is also a classmate of Ruskin Bond, who often disapproves her acts. Maharani’s burning love with Bolivian diplomat is excellently described by the author.

Overall she is an amazing character, with a unique passion whose charm spread across the hill. With this, there is a mystery of a nun whose appearance sends chills to the spine. Do read this book to find out!

Writing style:

The language is pretty simple and the narration is smooth making you finish this book in two sittings.

My perception:

I really enjoyed this book. This book is adorned with the black humor which definitely makes you laugh. The serene narration of Mussoorie is worth to read. Though I’ve found this story is little bit resemble the β€˜Susanna’s Seven Husbands’ but still both are a different story. The characters are well built and the way the author has written them is something worth to read. The Maharani is something amusing; a puzzled character which you can’t understand often disapproves her act but still can’t help to fall in love with her.

We often make decision in our life without thinking its pros and cons. From these some of the decisions are spontaneous and some are made by our nature and ego. We hardly ever get a chance to reform it, but even if we get a chance then how we amend our mistakes /decisions is something worth to think. This book revolves around the same scenario.

There are some books which are marked as a classic and must read, you often wonder what makes this book a classic. And you find the answer only when you read the book. This book is one of such books. Though this book was on my kindle since 5 months, I didn’t read it thinking that the language would be hard. One day one of my bookstagrammer friends, Mudrika @heer_13 wrote an impressive review of this book and then I decided to give it a read. .
