The catchy cover of this book and the great reviews on Goodreads and Amazon made me pick this book up for reading next. Been described as a gripping Indian horror thriller on the cover page, it is enough to catch the attention of all the horror lovers out there! So that was the main reason I began reading this book, and, just like the cover page suggests, this turned out to be one of the most horrifying stories that I have ever read!
The story begins with a helpless college girl being trapped in a filthy, abandoned place, badly injured and horrified. She last remembers standing at the bus stop when she was hit by something on the back of her head. She is horrified to bits looking at her injuries when her captivator comes up to her and, bam! She breathes her last! Many such people have been going missing all of a sudden in the city and no one knows where they are disappearing.
Meanwhile, in the other end of the city, there’s a small but happy family of Anuradha and her two daughters, Maya and Namrata. Anuradha is ageing, her elder daughter Maya hasn’t completely recovered from the shocking death of her husband and Namrata is just like any other teenage girl. Maya is a Biology teacher at a school where she spends some quality time gossiping and chitchatting with her colleague and friend, Padma. Most of their gossips are about the mysterious and weird art teacher at the school, Bhaskar.
However, Maya’s life changes when she once has to take help from Bhaskar for a project and that is when she finds out he is a good man. She tends to be attracted towards him and the two begin to date. Although Anuradha and Namrata are not happy with the new man in Maya’s life, Maya goes ahead and marries Bhaskar.
That’s when Maya’s life takes a turn! After marriage, she finds out that she knows very little about her mysterious new husband. Where does he spend his entire day and evening? Why does he come home so late? What meat does he eat? There are so many questions that Maya sets out to find an answer for! And, the truth about Maya’s new husband is horrifying! Maya finds out why her friend Padma had suddenly gone missing one day and what her new husband is up to!
The writing style is easy and very descriptive. Neil has done a great job in describing situations, so much so that, you can actually imagine or feel things going happening in front of you and that can give you goosebumps. The entire book is written in a very haunting style so that it will leave you horrified to say the least.
Maya’s New Husband is a great book to read for all the horror lovers. But, mind you, this is not mere horror, its gore! So go for it only if you can read gore. It gets dirty and filthy at many points and you may want to throw up sometimes after reading a few incidences. But those who can manage to read the genre can, or I must say surely, should pick up this book. It is intriguing and captivating and you will just want to read on!
